Dave successfully answered Joey's question:

Am I able to use this image http://www.channel4.com/learning/microsites/E/essentials/history/imagebank/tudorexpl/treasure_chest.gif
in part of my own image? If not, I would like to find other pictures of treasure chests that I can use/modify.

I would advise against using the image for anything other than personal use. Unless you have explicitly licenced the image or the image was released under a non-restrictive licence, you would not have any rights to use the image, especially for commercial use.

What would suit you best is an image released under the Creative Commons license. For example, you can do an (advanced) search at flickr.com for "treasure chest" and filter for only results licensed under Creative Commons.

If you look http://www.eachmapinject.com/treasure_chest/ you can see I am using it as a logo for my personal site, this is non commercial correct?

That is correct, it appears to be non-commercial use.

Basically, there are two routes that are typically followed. You just add something on the website/webpage that says all images used are believed to be public domain (which it may very well be), and to contact yadayada@email.com to report any copyrighted material. Additionally, you could email the people you got the image from and ask if you can use it on your website...for noncommercial stuff, there tends to not be any issues with it. I actually have done this before, and the artist was perfectly fine with it.

I suppose if your contact information is readily available, you could probably proceed as-is without any problems.
