I've heard it's not worth it to sharpen drill bits and that you should just throw them out and buy new ones when they become dull. Is this accurate?

That is basically accurate. The relatively low cost of drill bits makes it more cost effective to just throw them out and buy new ones. However, if you find you are going through a large number of bits, the "Drill Doctor" is an inexpensive tool that is cost effective. It really depends on how many bits you find yourself using.
