In high level competitions there is an advantage in playing with White, they actually win significantly more often than Black. In lower levels this is not as noticeable. However, in competitions, players don't just play one game to win a round, they usually play an even number of games and alternate wich plays White, so I wouldn't call it an unfair advantage (since each has the advantage of playng White as many times as his\her opponent).
