I have a 1998 Chevy Cavalier--an automatic. Recently, after I'd pulled into a parking space (thankfully) and went to put the car in park, I found that the gear shift was completely "loose". The gear shift will not engage at all and will just move back and forth.

Unlike the last answerer I have owned several Cavaliers and I know that they have the shifter in the floor.
On some models there is an adjuster on the cable going from the shifter to the tranny, it will sometimes break or come loose, or your shifter cable could be broken, either way you can get to it from under the hood on top of the tranny and through the shifter console.
This is a minor repair that a shade tree mechanic can probably do for much less than a shop granted that GM doesnt charge an arm and a leg for parts or they are obtained from a scrap yard.
