i drive a ford escort wagon. it wont go into overdrive, it just races at the gear below it. if by some miracle it does go into overdrive, if i turn on the A/C, the transmission slips and begins to race again. what's wrong?

If you have driven with low tranny fluid for a long time then your transmission is probably shot. Or your transmission may just be worn out from old age as I have seen Escorts with 200,000+ miles on them before, those cars were not really built to last to such a ripe age.

Addition.... I know that some larger Ford (Thunderbird)cars ofetn have a problem with the Torque Converter lock not working and causing overdrive to not kick in, not sure if this applies to Escorts.
The engine racing is more of a sign of slippage and transmission damage.
