In this Hillerman mystery, Officer Chee und Lieutenant Leaphorn of the Navajo Tribal Police team up for the first time. Chee, who in his free time offers his services to the community as a ceremonial singer, is almost assassinated in the middle of the night, and a series of mysterious murders occur that appear to have a superstitious background. Together, Leaphorn and Chee find out that all but one of the victims had been patients of Badwater Clinic, a Hospital run by Dr. Bahe Yellow Horse, and that the only one who was not a patient had been an employee of the Indian Health Service who had contacted the others shortly before their deaths. Before they can learn more about Yellow Horse's possible involvement in the murder cases, however, Chee is lured to an isolated farm in the mountains to perform a blessing way. The visit turns out to be a deadly trap, and it is only in the last minute that Leaphorn is able to save his new colleague's life!
