I read in my social security statement the following: "Remember, it's your earnings, not the amount of taxes you paid or the number of credits you've earned, that determine your benefit amount." In the 1980s, for various reasons, I didn't file taxes at all but earned a high income, sometimes over six figures. If I could file for those years now (even though I could never afford to pay the fees and penalties), would that unreported income be used to figure my retirement benefits? Seems unlikely to me, but maybe somebody knows different. . . .
